Immigration
« ‘Phone calls | Back to most recent briefing | Middle East »
Asked about what Alistair Darling had meant when talking about imposing restrictions on immigration from Bulgaria and Romania to the UK the PMS said that Alistair Darling was talking about the need for a mature debate on the issue and making the general point about the need for a managed migration system. In terms of the EU and Romania and Bulgaria, decisions will be made at the appropriate time, i.e. once the Commission had reported to the whole of the EU regarding accession preparations at, possibly, the end of September. When asked repeatedly if the Bulgarians and Romanians would be treated differently than the Poles in regard to immigration the PMS again said that a decision would be made at the appropriate time.

The government in my opinion should first consider legalising who is here illegaly or has been here for yrs before than accepting and accepting more immigrants.I’m not against accepting them but is it fair on people who have been here for years contributing to uk economy to "lock them up"
Comment by Antonio — 22 Aug 2006 on 2:15 pm | LinkT’aint about fair, it’s about making money. That’s purely and simply what government is about today; making money, devising more ways to make money, and keeping the people under control so the government and it’s beneficiaries can continue to make money. Easy. Consider it like that and everything makes sense. Sounds terribly cynical, but it’s a cynical world, and has been proven time and again nothing is more cynical than government…
