Rendition flights

Asked what was the Prime Minister’s response to the leaked document regarding rendition flights, the PMOS said he had dealt with that question, and there was nothing more to say about it. As he had said earlier, people were getting much more excited about the fact of the leak, rather than about the content of it. If people read the document, it said nothing new.

Put that it did tell people things they did not know before, the PMOS said equally, if people looked at it, it was simply a work in progress towards Jack Straw’s statement on 12December 2005 and what he had said to the Select Committee on the 13 December, nothing more than that.

Asked why when Charles Kennedy had asked about rendition flights, the Prime Minister had not made clear that he was aware of two cases that were being investigated, the PMOS said that an investigation was still going on, and it was not complete at that time. Asked further about the timings of the document, the PMOS said that in terms of the research, it was still going on, and Jack Straw had made his statement on 12 December. Asked again about timings, the PMOS said that there was research that was not complete on 7 December.

So, the PM doesn’t ‘know’ anything until the ‘investigation’ is complete.

Excellent. Standard procedure for Downing Street – know nothing until it’s all buttoned up and we’ve got the story straight.
