Asked if the Prime Minister agreed with Kevin McNamara that Michael Howard’s comments "had something of a whiff of the gas chamber" the PMOS said that he would not comment on party political matters or what the leader of the opposition had said. But in terms of travellers he would simply repeat what he had this morning which was that in the Government’s view you had to deal with the root cause of this problem. The root cause of this problem was that there was a shortage of legal sites. Therefore it was not simply enough to say that you had to deal with illegal sites you, also had to provide legal sights. Otherwise you were just moving the problem from one part of the country to another.
