Asked if the Prime Minister had had any contact with the DUP overnight and was he disappointed with the lack of progress, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister had had regular contact with all parties. The parties were still talking and he was following the situation closely. As the Prime Minister had said last week, the basis for a reasonable agreement was established and it was for the parties to take that forward.
Asked if there was an expectation that there would be a deal this week, the PMS said that he wouldn’t get drawn into speculation about timing. The Prime Minister had also said that it was important the parties were given the right time and space.
Asked if there was a new deadline, the PMS replied that he wouldn’t characterise it as a deadline; the Prime Minister and the Taoiseach had asked for a progress update last week.
