Children’s Commissioner

Asked if the Prime Minister was disappointed that the Children Schools and Families Select Committee had declined to endorse the proposed candidate for Children’s Commissioner following a pre-appointment hearing, the PMS said that the Secretary of State Ed Balls was able to choose whether or not he wanted to accept the advice. Ed Balls had put out a statement this morning saying that the report did not put forward any new relevant facts concerning Maggie Atkinson s suitability for the post.

Asked if the Prime Minister was disappointed with the committee s decision, the PMS said that the Prime Minister supported the decision the Secretary of State had made.

Put that a member of the committee had described the Secretary of State as a bully, the PMS said that he would not comment on what a Parliamentary colleague may or may not have said about another Parliamentary colleague as it was not appropriate.

Asked for the Prime Minister s policy on bullying, the PMS said that the Prime Minister did not condone any form of bullying.
