Afghanistan

Asked what the Prime Minister was intending to say to President Obama about Afghanistan and whether he looked favourably upon the idea of sending more troops, the PMS said the Government position was that troops levels were kept under review. The UK and its NATO allies would be discussing the assessments of General McChrystal s Strategic Review. The Prime Minister would discuss this with NATO allies as and when he met them as well as through the formal processes. As the Prime Minister said earlier in the month, the Government already agreed with some of General McChrystal s strategy, particularly on Afghanisation and insuring that the training of the Afghan army, police and other security forces happens as quickly as possible. This was why the programme had been accelerated.
