UN General Assembly/G20

The Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) began by telling assembled journalists that the Prime Minister had recorded a podcast that had been broadcast over the weekend. In this the Prime Minister had described the five global challenges; climate change, poverty, nuclear proliferation, terrorism and the economy. These were the issues the Prime Minister would be concentrating on over the next few days.

Asked if the Prime Minister would be meeting with Colonel Gaddafi while in the US, the PMS replied that there were no plans for a meeting between the Prime Minister and Colonel Gaddafi. Asked if that meant there would be no public meeting or whether they would not meet at all, the PMS said that the two of them would be in at least one meeting together, but there were no plans for a bilateral meeting.

Asked if etiquette had been discussed, such as the shaking of hands, if the Prime Minister was to have an informal meeting with Colonel Gaddafi, the PMS repeated that there were no plans for a bilateral meeting. Asked whether the Libyans had asked for a meeting, the PMS said not that he was aware of. Asked what other contact there would be between members of the UK delegation and members of the Libyan delegation, the PMS replied that that was a hypothetical question.
