Asked if the Prime Minister had a view on what Lord Foulkes had said in the Lords this afternoon, about General Dannatt needing a lesson in loyalty, the PMS said that that was not a view that the Prime Minister would subscribe to. Put that the Chancellor had said that he had never turned down any financial requests form the military and could the PMS confirm that the Prime Minister had not turned down any requests to them, the PMS said that the Chancellor was responsible for decisions on financial matters and he spoke on behalf of the Government on financial matters. Asked to confirm that the Prime Minister had not turned down any requests for equipment by the military before they had been passed to the Treasury, the PMS said that he could confirm that the defence budget had increased significantly during the period that the Prime Minister was Chancellor and we had seen a huge increase in the amount of resources available to the operation in Afghanistan. We had seen the budget increase from 700million a few years ago to over 3billion now. The PMS added that he would not accept any of the premises in what was quite a convoluted question. The Chancellor spoke on behalf of the Government on these matters and had made his views clear. Briefing took place at 16:45 | Search for related news Original PMOS briefings are © Crown Copyright.
