Asked if the Prime Minister had had any further thoughts on the makeup of the Iraq inquiry panel following Lord Butler’s remarks, the PMS that the Prime Minister had made his views on the Iraq inquiry clear yesterday at the press conference in Brussels and in his letter to Sir John Chilcott. Sir John Chilcott was now going through the process of meeting leaders of other political parties and the chairs of the relevant Select Committees, and from there he would set out how he and his colleagues thought things should proceed.
Asked if the Prime Minister would accept a decision from Sir John Chilcott to have a military presence on the inquiry, the PMS said that he was not going to pre-judge what Sir John Chilcott would conclude from his discussions. We had set out the membership of the committee carrying out the inquiry, as well as the objectives of the inquiry. As the Prime Minister said in his letter to Sir John Chilcott yesterday, we were keen that the inquiry proceeded as efficiently as possible.
