» Friday, June 19, 2009Lindsey Oil Refinery Strikes
Asked if the Prime Minister supported the wildcat strikes at Lindsey Oil Refinery, the PMS said that the Government did not support the strikes; unofficial strike action and demonstrations were never the right response to industrial relations problems. This was principally a matter between the companies and the workers and we hoped that the matter could be resolved as quickly as possible. We understood that ACAS had convened talks, which were due to start this morning, between the employer and GMB and we urged all the parties to take part in those talks. Asked if the Prime Minister was concerned about spreading industrial unrest, the PMS said that the Government was against unofficial strike action and we thought that the right thing to do was for employers and workers to engage in the sort of process that had been started this morning between Total and GMB. Asked if there was any comment on the job losses at Lindsey, the PMS said that the letters of dismissal were sent yesterday and the workers had the option to reapply for their jobs. The Government hoped that the workers would do so, and start talks with their employers. Briefing took place at 11:00 | Search for related news Original PMOS briefings are © Crown Copyright.
