MPs’ Expenses
« Iran | Back to most recent briefing | Speaker of the House of Commons election »
Asked why the Prime Minister’s expenses had been redacted when he was in favour of transparency, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that the Prime Minister had already addressed questions regarding his expenses; he was in favour of transparency and as far as the PMS was aware the Prime Minister did not request the redactions, but it was best to speak to the Prime Minister’s Political Spokesman on the matter of expenses. The redactions had been done by the Fees Office.
Put that the Fees Office had said that if MPs were unhappy with the redactions they could self-publish the full list of their expenses, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had set out his position on his own expenses; he was very happy to have all his expenses put before a House of Commons group, which included auditors. It was important for there to be a transparent system so that when a claim was reported to the Fees Office they could publish them on the Internet. The Prime Minister’s principle was maximum transparency.
