Speaker of the House of Commons election
« MPs’ Expenses | Back to most recent briefing | King Abdullah of Jordan »
Asked if the Prime Minister would vote, the PMS said that the Prime Minister would not vote; it was the precedent and one that the Prime Minister supported. It was very important that the Prime Minister was not seen to express a view on any individual candidate.
Asked if the Prime Minister would say something this afternoon, the PMS said that the process was that once someone had been elected Speaker they were then dragged to the chair. That person then made a short speech and called the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister then made a congratulatory speech, followed by the Leader of the Opposition. Once the speeches were over the Speaker Elect called the Prime Minister again and the Prime Minister informed the House that the sitting was suspended.
