Asked about the new Afghan envoy’s responsibilities, and would there be a new UK Ambassador to Afghanistan, the PMS replied that the Foreign Secretary was due to make a statement on this at 10:30 today. The purpose of the appointment was to reinforce the UK’s strategic engagement both with Afghanistan and with Pakistan, and Sir Sherard would work closely with Richard Holbrooke and other international partners to help support both the Afghan and the Pakistani Governments.
