Iran
Asked what the Prime Minister said about Iran in Cabinet, the PMS said that the Prime Minister gave an update on the situation in Iran, as the Foreign Secretary was on a visit to Poland. The Prime Minister made clear that it was important that the regime acted in a way that respected human rights and responded without violence to the ongoing protests.
Asked how concerned the Prime Minister was about the demonstration held outside the British Embassy in Tehran, the PMS said that this was something that the Foreign Office kept under review and the travel advice on Iran had been updated in light of recent developments. The revised travel advice now advised British nationals against all but essential travel to Iran. This continued to be kept under review. The Foreign Office also announced yesterday that they were withdrawing dependents of Embassy staff in Iran until the situation improved.
Asked why the British had been singled out by Iranians, the PMS said that that question should be addressed to the Iranian regime. We had responded to the remarks that had come out of the Iranian regime in recent days; the Foreign Secretary issued a statement a couple of days ago and the Prime Minister spoke about this on Friday. However, it was not for us to start speculating publicly about the motives behind the public statements from senior people in Iran.
