» Wednesday, February 25, 2009Devolved nations meeting
Asked how the meeting went, the Prime Minister s Spokesman (PMS) told the assembled press that the meeting had only just finished, but the readout he had had was that it was a constructive meeting and they mostly discussed economic issues and how best the various constituent parts of the United Kingdom could best cooperate on dealing with the global economic downturn. Asked if he accepted the charge from Alex Salmond that Scotland would suffer as a result of efficiency savings being made in public services, the PMS replied that what we would accept was that the devolved administrations, like the rest of the UK, benefited significantly from the fiscal stimulus that we announced in the Pre-Budget Report alongside the efficiency savings that we announced and believed should apply to the whole of the UK. The overall benefit to the devolved administrations of the fiscal stimulus was in the region of 3.5billion, of which 2billion would benefit Scotland. So people did need to see the efficiency savings in the context of other support that was provided to the economy as a whole and the economies of the devolved administrations as well as the rest of the UK in the Pre-Budget Report.
