Ecstasy

Asked whether the Prime Minister had a view on the grading of Ecstasy, the PMS said that as the Home Office had been making clear, the Government firmly believed that Ecstasy should remain a Class A drug.

Asked what the point of the ACMD was when the Government ignored their recommendation, the PMS said that the Home Office had not requested the ACMD to review the classification of Ecstasy; it was doing it at the request of the Science and Technology Committee. Put that the Government had originally said that these decisions should be based on science, the PMS said that they made recommendations but it was ultimately for the Government to make decisions and set policy. It was our view that Ecstasy should remain a Class A drug.
