Budget Speculation
« House of Lords | Back to most recent briefing | Economy »
Asked whether the Government were looking to put the date of the Budget back, the PMS said that we were not at the point of giving consideration as to when the Budget date might be, so he would not accept the premise of the question. Asked whether it could take place after the end of the financial year, the PMS said that there had been numerous examples of Budgets taking place in April, but advised people not to read anything into that as it was a factual point.
Asked about a possible new stimulus package, the PMS said those reports were very premature. We were not at the point where there was any serious consideration being given to Budget proposals.
Asked whether there was a case for delaying the Budget until after the G20, the PMS said that when we were in a position to make announcements on the date of the Budget, then we would do so. The PMS added that he would not get into a hypothetical discussion about what the circumstances might be.
