Crime Statistics

Asked whether the Prime Minister agreed that there was a correlation between rising crime and the economic situation, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) told the assembled press that as Jacqui Smith had been saying, the Government would not necessarily agree with those who said an economic downturn had to mean an increase in crime.

Asked why the Government wouldn’t necessarily agree, the PMS said that the Government could take action to help reduce crime and overall, the figures had shown that recorded crime had fallen by 3%, recorded violence was down by 6% and the risk of being a victim of crime was at a historically low level.
