Asked if the Prime Minister would be raising the subject of Zimbabwe with Nelson Mandela, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) repeated what he had said at this morning’s lobby; this was a private meeting, taking place because Mr Mandela was in London to attend events marking his 90th birthday. It had been in the diary for some time. In regards to Zimbabwe, our efforts were focused on the current generation of African leaders. Asked if the Prime Minister had had or would be having any conversations with other African leaders, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had had a whole series of conversations yesterday with African leaders and both No 10 and the Foreign Office were keeping in touch with our colleagues in the region. Asked if it was the case that Mandela could influence the current generation of African leaders and if the Prime Minister would be asking Mandela to put pressure on them, the PMS said that it was not for the Prime Minister to recommend any particular course of action to Mr Mandela. Put that President Mbeki and Nelson Mandela were of the same generation, the PMS said that the Government was focusing all its efforts on taking constructive action to deal with the situation in Zimbabwe and we were in intensive discussions with a number of the leaders in the region. Asked if the Prime Minister welcomed Jacob Zuma’s criticism of the current regime in Zimbabwe, the PMS said that there was growing international condemnation of what was happening in Zimbabwe; we had seen this from a number of statements from senior African figures in recent days and we also saw it in an expression of world opinion from the UN statement last night. We welcomed the growing international condemnation of the actions of Mr Mugabe and his cabal. Briefing took place at 16:45 | Search for related news Original PMOS briefings are © Crown Copyright.
