Zimbabwe

Asked if there was any movement on Zimbabwe following the Prime Minister’s statement to the House, the PMS said the key thing he would draw peoples attention to, was that the Prime Minister had said that he had spoken to a number of African leaders during the course of today, as had David Miliband and Mark Malloch-Brown. There would be a discussion in the Security Council in New York later today, so we would see how that developed. The Prime Minister also said that there were plans for SADOC to meet very soon and we supported the plans for that to happen quickly. He had also urged the UN and African Union to work together with SADOC to send envoys and a mission to Zimbabwe to discuss the situation on the ground and the way forward.

Put that the Prime Minister said that the world was of one view and this was a regime that should not be recognised and was that a new stance, the PMS said that this was probably the strongest language the Prime Minister had used in recent times to his knowledge. Asked if this was a rallying call, the PMS said there was an opportunity for the world to express a view through the UN Security Council when it met later today.

Put that the Prime Minister had said that he had spoken to President Mbeki and did the South African President share the views of the Prime Minister, the PMS replied that he was not a spokesman for the South African Government and he did not want to get into the private conversations that the Prime Minister had had with individual world leaders.

Asked if the Prime Minister had discussed the situation with Nelson Mandela, or, was he planning to during the course of Nelson Mandela’s visit, the PMS said that Nelson Mandela was here in honour of his 90th birthday celebrations and that would be his main activity.

Asked if the Prime Minister would be seeing him, the PMS said that he would be.
