Asked if the Prime Minister had given a response to Alex Salmond’s letter, the PMS replied that it was not quite clear how many letters there were. We did receive a letter yesterday from Mr Salmond, but it appeared to be a different letter to the one that appeared in newspapers over the weekend. So at this point we were not clear if we were due to receive a second letter or not. Once we were clear on whether there was one letter or two, then we would take a view as to how we should respond.
Asked which was the first letter, the PMS replied that we received a letter yesterday on the general issue of oil and fuel duty, which was similar to a letter we read about in the Sunday newspapers, but did not appear to be exactly the same letter.
Asked if we would be releasing copies of the letter, the PMS replied that as far as we were concerned, this was a private correspondence and would remain that way.
