MPs’ Pay
« Prime Minister of Qatar | Back to most recent briefing | Post Offices »
Asked if we had had the Baker Review on MPs’ pay, the PMS replied that we had not had the Baker Review yet.
Asked if there was any way that the Prime Minister would countenance some sort of "catch-up" pay award for MPs, the PMS replied that we had not seen any proposal from the Speaker’s Review either, and we understood that his review was still ongoing. The Baker Review would be submitted and published shortly. The Prime Minister’s general position on this was that he had made it clear that he wanted to see a more transparent system for MPs’ pay, so that taxpayers knew that the money paid to MPs was properly used and accounted for. But in advance of the Speaker’s Review and the Baker Review, we would look at them when we received them, but we would not comment on speculation in the interim.
Asked if the Prime Minister would expect MPs to stick to the 3% that he was expecting of other public sector workers, the PMS replied that this was something that had already been voted on and discussed in Parliament in recent months.
