Asked about the allegation that British diplomats are campaigning to stop France getting the key financial job in the European Commission, the PMS replied that the decision on who is appointed is for the President of the European Union. He restated that the UK is delighted to have secured Cathy Ashton as the High Representative and he was confident that an appropriate Commission would be selected to work alongside her. Asked whether there was any signal from Brussels that the financial job might be split in to two positions, the PMS replied that he had not heard talk of that.
