Child migrants

The PMS was then asked when the Prime Minister would apologise to the British child migrants who had been sent to Australia up until the 1960s. The PMS replied that it was a sad story and that the Prime Minister felt personally upset about this situation. He said that the Prime Minister would make an apology on behalf of the Government and would like to consult over the next few months with the Child Migrant’s Trust and the International Association of Former Child Migrants.

The High Commissioner in Australia had commented yesterday and the Prime Minister had spoken to Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd about the issue. When asked why the Prime Minister would not apologise now, the PMS said that the Prime Minister would have conversations with the organisations mentioned and he would acknowledge what has happened and that the people who had been through this terrible experience should understand that both governments are very concerned.

Asked whether compensation would be a possibility, the PMS replied that we would look at whether we would provide support and advice but he had not heard any discussions about compensation.
