Asked if the Prime Minister would do any more lobbying on behalf of Tony Blair this week, the PMS said the Prime Minister would continue to do so. The Prime Minister retained the view that if Tony Blair wished to be a candidate he would be the right candidate.

Asked if the Prime Minister would take part in any events to mark the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, the PMS said not that he was aware of.

Asked if the Prime Minister would want a British candidate for the role of High Representative and if so would it be the Foreign Secretary, the PMS said there would be a number of vacancies and not just two. The Foreign Secretary did not wish to put his name forward for the role. The Prime Minister had said he was doing an excellent job as Foreign Secretary.

Asked if the Prime Minister would be disappointed if Baroness Ashton did not have a role at the end of the process, the PMS said it was a little premature to speak about individual commissioners. The Prime Minister thought she was doing a very good job in her current role.

Asked if there had been any discussions about David Miliband taking the role of High Representative, the PMS said there had been plenty of speculation including reports that No10 had been lobbying for David Miliband, which was incorrect.

Asked whether David Miliband would definitely not take up the role, the PMS said that he was just repeating what the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary had said. David Miliband could not have been more definitive.
