Prime Minister’s Authority

Asked if the situation on allowances/gurkhas reflected the Prime Minister losing authority, the PMS said the Prime Minister was focusing on the big issues that concerned the country, including MPs expenses. The Prime Minister recognised that issues reflecting the Gurkhas were emotive issues, but there were plenty of other big issues facing the country, including swine flu, the economy, public service reform and terrorism.
Asked if the Prime Minister ought to focus a little on MP discipline, the PMS said that the issues about Gurkhas were controversial, that the Government needed to do more and the views of Parliament would be taken into account. On MPs expenses, it was a difficult issue as the system had been in place many years and there would always be resistance, but that didn’t mean you shouldn’t try to confront the critics and deal with the process of change.
