Asked if the Prime Minister had taken a view on the state of social work in the UK in the light of the Baby P case, the PMS replied that this was clearly a very tragic case that clearly had a deep impact on everybody who had been following it. Safeguarding children was undoubtedly one of the Government s top priorities and we expected it to be a top priority for local agencies and local authorities as well. There was a serious case review under way and we would consider very carefully whether there needed to be a further investigation of child protection procedures and practices amongst local agencies in Haringey specifically. But undoubtedly this was a very serious and very tragic case. Asked if there was any chance of a public inquiry, the PMS replied that the first step we needed to take was to look carefully at the serious case review and then look further as to whether or not we needed to look specifically at circumstances in Haringey. Asked further about an inquiry, the PMS replied that Beverly Hughes announced yesterday that she and Ed Balls had asked Lord Laming to prepare an independent report on the progress that had been made on Lord Laming s initial inquiry and recommendations following the Victoria Climbie case.
