US Visit
Asked about the Prime Minister’s trip to the US, the PMS replied that we were happy to confirm what the Americans had said, which was that the Prime Minister would go to Camp David early next week, but we did not want to go beyond that.
Asked what the aims of the trip were, the PMS replied that there would be wide ranging discussions with President Bush covering where we were with the trade talks, climate change, Darfur, Iraq, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Russia. There would be plenty to discuss.
Put to him that the Americans had flagged up their plans for missile defence in Europe as a priority for the talks, and this was also a priority for us, the PMS replied that no doubt, this would be covered as well.
Asked if the Prime Minister would be at pains to reassure President Bush that Britain remained a close ally, and maybe distance himself from the impression created by the Douglas Alexander speech and the Malloch Brown interview, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister made his views on that very clear at the time, and that had been understood.
Put that there had been comments that the visit had been put forward, the PMS replied that there were diary considerations whenever a trip was planned. We had announced the visit date for this trip some time ago
