Asked if the Prime Minister shared Jack Straw's personal view on Muslim women wearing veils, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister believed that it was right that people should be able to have a discussion and to express their personal views. When asked if the Prime Minister was going to express his own view, the PMS said just as it was correct that people should be able to express their views, it was correct and right for people not to. Asked if the United Kingdom would ever go it alone and impose sanctions on Iran, perhaps with the US, if there could not be agreement between all five members of the Security Council, the PMS replied that the meeting this afternoon between the E3 (United Kingdom, Germany and France) plus US, China and Russia was to discuss next steps. We knew that what worked well was working together with our international partners. Briefing took place at 6:00 | Read whole briefing | Comments (0) Going forward and Northern Ireland
The PMS highlighted that as the House resumes sitting next week it will be the first PMQs back and the Northern Ireland talks would start during the latter half of next week in St. Andrews. Asked about talks the Prime Minister was having with Gerry Adams at Chequers, the PMS said they should not be surprised that discussions were taking place with all parties involved but that people should not expect any further words before St. Andrews next week. Asked if there was a contingency plan to deal with issues should they fail in reaching a deal, the PMS said, as always, matters should be dealt with if or when they arose.
