» Tuesday, October 3, 2006Gleneagels Dialogue
Asked what the hopes were for the Gleneagles Dialogue talks in Mexico, the Prime Minister's Official Spokesman (PMOS) said that this was an opportunity for us to impress on the rest of the world our view that there needed to be binding targets beyond 2012. If we could agree on a total limit for CO2 in the earth's atmosphere and international limits on emissions we would stand a far better chance of tackling climate change. This would build on the work done at Gleneagles last year and keep the momentum going which was important. Asked if the Prime Minister would be saying anything tomorrow on the IMC report, the PMOS said that he expected that the Prime Minister would say something tomorrow afternoon after the report had been published. This would be a significant report. We hoped it would provide a definitive answer to the question of whether the IRA campaign in all its forms was finally over. We would not be prejudging the IMC report, but it would be important to read the report and see what it said on that question. The report would lay the basis for the talks next week in St Andrews. Asked about expectations for the Human Trafficking Control Centre, the PMOS said that it brought together the Police, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) and all the other agencies involved in tackling this problem. The centre would provide a response to trafficking on a national level from police forces and other agencies whilst also working closely with the SOCA to combat trafficking at an international level. The centre would provide assistance to victims. Therefore as suggested it was setting up a central focus to tackle this issue, which was important.
