Iraq

The Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) told journalists that the Iraqi Government had announced today that it was taking responsibility for Al Muthana province, which we had forecast and which had happened today.
Asked for further information on the handover of Al Muthana, the PMOS said that this was something that we first discussed with the Prime Minister of Iraq when we had visited Baghdad. It was a very welcome move, and it was a sign that the Iraqi Government was establishing its authority and ability. We hoped that this was something that would progressively happen whenever the Iraqi Government decided.
Asked if British troops would be leaving the area in July, the PMOS said that would be a matter of discussion with the Iraqi Government in terms of presence etc.
