Asked for further detail on the wealth creation figures, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) said that these figures showed the degree of growth in the economy in the UK. Wealth creation by large companies in the UK increased by 10% on last year which was greater than France and Germany. The UK had more companies in the top league than any of its European counterparts.
Asked about concerns by the new head of the CBI that the uncertainty over the leadership of the Government was harming business, the PMOS referred journalists to the figures he had just quoted. Aside from the 10% rise in wealth creation by top UK companies, the UK had 197 out of the top 700 European companies, the highest in Europe. UK companies had higher wealth creation efficiency adding more value at less cost. These statistics were from the 2006 Value Added Scoreboard, published by the DTI, fortuitously today.
