Asked if any Government meetings on Darfur would be taking place this week, the PMS said that she was not aware of any meetings involving Ministers. However, it was an issue that was under constant discussion, as you would expect.

Perhaps I am out of touch with reality but this comment has shocked me a bit – that no Ministers are going to talk – ALL WEEK – about something which is killing, – what, hundreds? – of people each day in a country currently under a UN warning is astonishing to me and I find it very depressing. After Rwanda, the west said "never again". It’s happening again and we’re not having any meetings about it. We rush into invading Iraq so that Halliburton can rebuild it once those pesky Muslims stop killing each other, but we can’t even have MINISTERIAL MEETINGS about going into a country which the AU, the UN and the Aid Agencies have all said is a bloodbath? What is going ON?
Comment by Robin — 10 Aug 2004 on 2:37 am | LinkLike me you have started with an assumption that Ministers ‘give a shit’ – they don’t – this conflict has been on going for several years. They did nothing last year so why would they do anything different this year?
Comment by Roger Huffadine — 10 Aug 2004 on 10:03 am | LinkIt is also ‘holiday’ time and they are unlikely to give up their ‘well earned?" rest.
That’s great….
Everybody’s talking about the problem, but in a completely unstructured way that does little more than make them feel that they’ve done their part by talking about it amongst themselves.
How else can someone translate this? No meetings; because meetings have, almost by definition, to come to some kind of conclusion, and we wouldn’t want anything like a conclusion because that might lead to something actionable, and actionable things mean having to get OFF OUR BUTTS.
Go on, find a better translation. I dare ya.
Comment by Gregory Block — 11 Aug 2004 on 11:40 am | LinkYour wrong Robin its thousands not hundreds. Theres over a million displaced people. Its terrible that ministers don`t give a shit. It happens every time. They first said "never again" over the holocaust but at least we tried to stop that.
Comment by Roger Sanchez — 12 Aug 2004 on 11:58 am | LinkHowever its not acceptable that they only just started doing the miserable amount they are doing now they should have started doing something a long time ago before it blew up. Just like in Zimbabwe we should invade now. And I hope you`ll join me in calling for us to invade Zimbabwe.
