The PMS was then asked again about the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and why Nicolas Sarkozy would be there. She replied that it was important to have, especially in the run up to Copenhagen, other European voices to help in the discussions. We would hope from CHOGM that we can build a momentum and see an opportunity for the voice of vulnerable countries to be heard on climate change issues. She also pointed out that President Sarkozy was invited by the Prime Minister of Trinidad.

Asked whether the Prime Minister welcomed the fact that President Obama is going to Copenhagen, the PMS said that we would welcome President Obama’s decision and said that she was sure his presence would add further momentum towards getting the ambitious, fair and binding deal that the world needs.

Asked about whether the Prime Minister and President Obama would meet there, she said she did not believe that the dates coincided. Quizzed on why it was thought that Obama could make a significant contribution by turning up at the start of the conference, the PMS said that the key thing was that President Obama’s presence in Copenhagen was another indicator of the seriousness that the US administration is taking on the climate change agenda. She added that this was on the back of an announcement that had been made about emissions cuts and that the US would make an important contribution towards the agreement that we are looking for in Copenhagen.
