European Council President

Asked if the Prime Minister thought that Tony Blair should make it known whether or not he would be a candidate for President of the European Council, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had always said that Tony Blair would be an excellent candidate for the presidency of the council. This was never going to be an easy decision and today saw a series of negotiations in Brussels. It was up to the individual candidate in terms of how public their intentions were.
Asked if the Prime Minister believed that this process had enhanced the European Union’s reputation for democratic legitimacy, the PMS said that the Prime Minister was used to the way in which decisions were made. We hoped that whatever the decision tonight it would be quickly put into place.
Put that Tony Blair now stood very little chance of becoming the President of the European Council, the PMS said that he would not be repeating the fact that the Prime Minister thought that Tony Blair was an excellent candidate if he didn’t think the competition was still open.
