Diego Garcia
« Iraq | Back to most recent briefing | David Blunkett »
Asked for a reaction to suggestions that the British Government was ignoring a High Court ruling on Diego Garcia so that the US could continue to lease the island from the UK and perhaps turn it into another Guantanamo Bay, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) referred journalists to a statement from the Foreign Office on this issue on 16 June. He had nothing further to add.
Asked to confirm that no detainees were being held on Diego Garcia, the PMOS said that the Prime Minister had set out the position in the Commons today. His words spoke for themselves.

"His words spoke for themselves"
No they didn’t – TB didn’t answer the question.
or maybe the PMOS had a different live video feed than me.
Comment by Roger Huffadine — 1 Jul 2004 on 11:31 am | LinkThe Government has stolen an Island having `ethnic clensed’ it. As the Government supposedly acts in the name of its people, I hang my head in absolute shame. This is yet another awful example of one law for the powerful nations and another for the defenceless.
It is revelations like the stealing of the island 40 years ago and recently compounded by Tony Blair via an Order in Council which makes me ashamed of being British.
