Cricket/Zimbabwe
Asked about the Foreign Secretary’s meeting this afternoon with the ECB regarding the forthcoming cricket tour to Zimbabwe, the PMOS said that our position on this issue had not changed. We sympathised with the ECB over the position in which they found themselves. However, they were very well aware of our view. That said, as the Prime Minister had told the Commons yesterday, we could not order individuals not to travel.

Pathetic. This government has lost all backbone. Expecting a cricket team to have the conviction not to travel to zimbabwe when blair can’t bring himself to have proper sanctions. he really has lost it.

I’m not against sanctions – but I am strongly behind ministers who have said, quite plainly, that it’s difficult to tell whether the effects of many sanctions would bring more good than harm to the poorest people in the country, and those most vulnerable.
Blind sanctions just don’t work in these situations.
