Select Committee

Asked if the Prime Minister was planning any early progress on the idea of converting his own special Select Committee on intelligence and security, the PMS said that we had set out a number of proposals on how we could reform the work of the Intelligence Select Committee. There would be a process of consultation and discussion with Parliament, security services and other affected bodies, but we would let people know more when it was available.
Asked was it not unusual in that it did not require legislation to Parliament, as it as the Prime Minister’s own committee and he inherited it from the Prime Minister, the PMS said that it was something that he would want to discuss with Parliamentary authorities and with the security services. That was what we would be doing over the period ahead. The PMS continued that this was not a unilateral decision that the Prime Minister wanted to take, but rather, it was something that he would want to take in consultation with all of those affected.
