Prime Minister’s Plane

Asked when the Prime Minister would be coming back, the Prime Minister’s Official Spokesman (PMOS) said he would be coming back overnight as flights tended to be then because of the time difference. Asked about what the Prime Minister had done today, the PMOS said the Prime Minster had been to Kliptown, where the ANC charter had been signed in 1955. He was the first world leader to have been invited to do so.

Asked if he had glorified any terrorism there, the PMOS said that the legislation was about the present not the past. Asked who was paying, the PMOS said that it was a government trip. The Prime Minister had met with President Lula of Brazil and other leaders to discuss world trade. He had also had a bilateral meeting with President Mbeki and met Nelson Mandela. The taxpayer would not pay for any extra costs entailed because of the engine failure.

Asked what the size of the entourage had been, the PMOS said it was about a dozen. Asked why he had not flown back earlier with Alan Johnson, the PMOS said, as he had said before, the Prime Minister had had a fairly full programme. As well as the progressive governance summit the Prime Minister had met President Mbeki and Nelson Mandela, which other Ministers had not. Asked if the Prime Minister had missed any major engagements in London as a result, the PMOS said there were none that he was aware of. He would have had regular office meetings.
