» Monday, June 6, 2011Bailey Report
Asked what the Prime Minister’s view was on the tightening up of the 9pm watershed, the PMS said that we had given our response to the report this morning; we had not gone into a great amount of detail on the specifics, but we would look carefully at the proposals, consider them in detail and work with businesses and regulators over the coming months. The next stage in the process was to come back and have a meeting with those stakeholders in October. The PMS said that the Government had a clear objective here and that was to ensure children were protected; this was a very detailed report with lots of recommendations and we would consider those and work with businesses and regulators to take them forward. Asked why there was a lack of urgency in acting on the report, the PMS said that this was something we had taken the decision to look at and there was a Minister for Children and Families who was charged with taking this forward. As the Prime Minister had said in his response, many of the actions were for businesses and regulators rather than for Government. We would work with those stakeholders to take this forward, but we would do that in the right way. Put that the Prime Minister would need to tell state-sponsored regulators to abide by what he thought should happen, the PMS said that we would have that discussion with businesses and regulators and come back in October. The general approach of this Government was not to immediately leap to the solution of generating a huge number of new regulations.
