Big Society

Asked about Liverpool City Council officially withdrawing from the Big Society project, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) told the assembled press that it was something we were looking into.

We were looking into what the particular issues were and whether there were barriers and problems in that particular project. The PMS added that we were trying to do something new and something slightly different and the point of these pilots was to see what would work.

  1. When considering the public’s reaction to the Budget proposals, can the P.M. (and the Chancellor) realise that whilst many, or indeed most, recognize the need for prudent fiscal measures to correct the deficit, there is a widespread belief that there are far too many well-off folk are misusing the system and exploiting loop-holes in the tax system. To bring the Big Society on board what is needed is a well publicised set of firm proposals to tighten the regime exploiting overseas residence and the like. If we are all in it, then why should a few be able to employ skilled accountants and make a mockery of our tax system? A new set of simple rules which gave no opportunities for claiming British citizens’ rights but not paying for domestic taxes at home would do a wonder for improving the public’s acceptance that the Government was dealing fairly with the whole of society.

If it seems to be fair, it will ease the acceptance of the necessary new tax levels, etc.
