European Commission

Asked if the Prime Minister planned to heed the advice from the European Commission on the UK’s deficit, the PMS said that this question stemmed from a leaked EC report, which we had not seen in its entirety. There was nothing more to add to what Liam Byrne had said this morning; we believed that halving the deficit over four years was the right approach. The UK was cutting its borrowing faster than any other advanced economy and this made it the sharpest deficit reduction plan in the G7. We would do nothing that put our recovery at risk.
