Hillsborough Agreement

Asked if the Prime Minister thinks it matters whether the Ulster Unionists back the further devolution or since with DUP and Sinn Fein backing it, it will go through anyway, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said the Prime Minister had said this was a critical day for Northern Ireland. The Secretary of State had reminded people that 75% of the population in Northern Ireland supported the Hillsborough Agreement and so therefore this is an Agreement that had widespread public support in Northern Ireland.

Asked if the Prime Minister had a view on President Bush speaking to David Cameron, the PMS said the Prime Minister thanked a number of leading political figures including President Obama and Secretary of State, Clinton. He didn’t specifically mention former President George Bush but the Prime Minister’s view would be that it was very helpful but there has been international support to get this Agreement over the line.

Asked if it was true the Ulster Unionists didn’t have the power to block it because they were too small compared to the others, the PMS said no, the Prime Minister wanted to emphasis that if everything goes to plan today then obviously it was a major step forward but obviously there still had to be a vote. Until that vote is concluded we do not definitely know.
