Falkland Islands
« Northern Ireland | Back to most recent briefing | Libya »
Asked if the situation in the Falklands was discussed in Cabinet and was there a concern that Argentina were regionalising this, the PMS said that there wasn’t any discussion on the issue, but Lord West had been commenting on this today.
The PMS added that the Government supported the rights of the Falkland Islands to develop a hydra-carbon sector and believed it was a completely legitimate commercial activity. We had ongoing contact with the government of Argentina through diplomatic channels on these matters and this activity was entirely compatible with continued good relations with the Argentinian government.
Asked if the Prime Minister had spoken to Defence chiefs about the issue, the PMS replied not that he was aware of. Put that Hugo Chavez had made some disparaging remarks about the UK, the PMS said that developments in the Falklands were entirely consistent with the good diplomatic relations we had with the Argentinian government.
