PM interview

Asked if people should expect more TV and radio appearances from the Prime Minister in the run-up to the general election following his interview on Sunday and phone-in today, the PMS said that it was not for him to comment on what the Prime Minister’s plans might be in a political sense. The PMS added that it was not unusual for the Prime Minister to take part in a phone-in on a regional visit.

Asked whether Downing Street had received any calls from viewers offering feedback, the PMS replied that he wouldn’t expect viewers to ring Downing Street. Asked whether the Prime Minister watched the interview, the PMS said that he did.

Asked whether the Prime Minister was aware of the questions that would be put to him beforehand, the PMS said that Piers Morgan was known to be nimble on his feet and the PMS was sure he approached the programme in the same way as he approached all his interviews.

Put that the Prime Minister had said that people could ask him any questions they liked and was it the case that nothing was out of bounds, the PMS replied that the Prime Minister was making a general point that he was open about these things. The PMS said that many of the issues covered last night were personal but the Prime Minister had done plenty of interviews that had just been on policy, so people should look at it in the round.

Asked if the Prime Minister had any plans to reconsider his stance on his children being kept out of the media spotlight, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had been clear that his children were off limits.

Asked whether the Prime Minister had thought that having done the interview, his children would become a target for the media, the PMS said absolutely not. There were clear guidelines on filming and photographing children agreed with the PCC. Anyone in public life had a right to a degree of privacy.

Put that the programme had used a photograph of the Prime Minister’s children, the PMS said that it had been released previously.
