Asked if the Government is furious with Kraft’s decision to close the factory in Somerdale, the PMS said, this is a matter for the Board and Shareholders of Kraft who have now concluded their takeover of Cadburys. He would echo what Lord Mandelson has said that he is disappointed with this decision. The Prime Minister has made clear his hope that Kraft would continue the level of investment in a great British company. Asked if the Government was misled by Kraft on their intentions, the PMS said, that as Lord Mandelson has said Kraft gave no indication of their intentions when they met last week. There were a number of decisions that Cadbury were in the process of making and this was one of the decisions that was underway. Every company has to make decisions even when they are in the middle of a takeover. The Prime Minster has said that we are determined that jobs in Cadbury can be secure and that remains the Government’s position. Asked if it is too easy for foreign companies to buy British businesses and if the Government are considering changing the rules, the PMS said, we have an open economy. There is no doubt that Cadbury is iconic company, which is why the Prime Minister and Lord Mandelson have made the comments they have.
