Greece

Asked if the Prime Minister’s call with President Barosso will discuss the potential bailout of Greece, the PMS said, the Prime Minister routinely speaks with President Barosso before European Summit meetings. Greece is a Eurozone issue, but the Government welcomes the efforts of the Greek Government to tackle the substantial economic and fiscal challenge they face. We support the Eurozone approach.

Asked if the Prime Minster is involved in any Eurozone decisions on Greece, the PMS replied, that as the UK is not a member of the Eurozone we don’t have the interest that other countries would have. But the Prime Minister has been updated on the situation in Greece on a regular basis.

Asked what the Prime Minister’s attitude is towards the situation in Greece, the PMS said, that the Prime Minister follows all developments in the financial markets closely. It is likely to be a subject that is discussed at the EU Summit and the Prime Minister will participate as appropriate.

Asked if the Prime Minister is a close political friend of the Greek Prime Minster, the PMS replied, that the Prime Minister has friendships with all the political leaders. He would not say he is particularly close to him than other leaders, but they have a good relationship.

Repeatedly asked if there were a European bailout of Greece would Britain be involved, the PMS said, it is far too premature to comment on what the next stage might be. The most important thing is for the Greek Government to tackle their economic and financial challenges. He said it would be inappropriate to comment on a hypothetical situation. Asked if the UK’s position outside the Eurozone made it institutionally impossible to be involved in a bailout, the PMS said, that is a question for the Treasury.

Asked if the Prime Minister though it was a vindication of his decision not to join the Eurozone, the PMS replied that, the Prime Minister is focused as always on the UK economy and the encouraging signs we are seeing that the UK is coming out of recession.
