European Council

Asked about the Prime Minister’s phone call today with President Barroso, the Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) said that the Prime Minister and President Barroso routinely spoke before councils and other meetings.
Asked if there would be a EU statement on Greece tomorrow at the meeting, the PMS said that the issue of Greece was not on the formal agenda for tomorrow, but it was likely to be discussed. The Prime Minister made clear at PMQs this afternoon that this was a matter for the Eurozone.
Asked if there were international funds available to Greece, the PMS said that the Prime Minister had referred to a G20 mechanism earlier in PMQs, that had been agreed at the G20 Summit last year. The important thing was that Greece was taking the right action with their deficit reduction programme.
Put that there had been rumours of a EU27 solution to the problem and asked what the Prime Minister’s reaction would be, the PMS said that that was a hypothetical question and as such he was not in a position to answer.
