Pope’s comments
« Northern Ireland | Back to most recent briefing | Counter terrorism »
Asked whether the Prime Minister was relaxed with the comments made by the Pope, the PMS said he didn’t think it was appropriate for him to comment on reported remarks made by the Pope, other than to say that the Prime Minister acknowledged the UK’s firm commitment to equality for all members of society.
The Government had set out its position very clearly on equal opportunities. The Government believed that the Equality Bill would make Britain a fairer and more equal place.
Asked if it was a state visit, the PMS said that he thought it was given the same status as a state visit, but technically it was not.
Asked about reports that some groups would try and disrupt the Pope’s visit, the PMS said that the Prime Minister would hope that the Pope’s visit was treated with the respect and the sense of occasion that was appropriate for a visit such as this.
