Cabinet

The Prime Minister’s Spokesman (PMS) gave a summary of Cabinet’s discussions, which included parliamentary business, the economy, a labour market update, updates on the talks in Northern Ireland, Haiti and the Afghanistan conference.

Asked if Cabinet had discussed Alternative Voting, the PMS said it had not been discussed at Cabinet.

Put repeatedly that the Government’s statements that the UK had experienced the worst recession in seventy years and that unemployment and repossessions were lower than in the 1990s didn’t add up, the PMS said that every recession was unique in nature and that the recession that had just ended had been driven in large part by a crisis in the financial services sector which had caused an international downturn. The PMS added that lessons had been learnt from previous recessions and the action taken by the Government and the flexibility demonstrated by businesses and families meant the impacts on repossessions, the labour market and insolvencies was less than in previous recessions.

Asked if Cabinet had expressed its appreciation for the work of the Governor of the Bank of England during the recession, the PMS said that the Governor was not mentioned in person and added that Cabinet’s discussion on the economy had focussed on Government policy.
